Veruca Salt — ʻʻSeetherʼʼ

Nina Gordon and Louise Post

Veruca Salt is an American alternative rock band founded in Chicago, Illinois, United States, in 1992 by vocalist-guitarists Nina Gordon and Louise Post, drummer Jim Shapiro and bassist Steve Lack.

The band named after Veruca Salt, the British spoiled rich girl from the 1964 children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and its 1971 film adaptation Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory directed by Mel Stuart.

The band had performed a handful of shows when Jim Powers of Minty Fresh Records asked them to sign to the independent label. The band’s first release was the single ʻʻSeether»/»All Hail Meʼʼ on Minty Fresh Records, in 1994. Since then lead singers known as faux-lesbians, they kissing in the ʻʻSeetherʼʼ video because it was ʻʻedgyʼʼ. As Louise Post stated for the record to Las Vegas Sun in 1997, ʻʻWe’re not lesbians, <...> People were trying to out us all over the place because we kissed in our videoʼʼ.

Anyway, due to Nina Gordon lyrics, in mass culture ʻʻseetherʼʼ is a slang term for the lesbian equivalent of a ʻʻskirt chasingʼʼ male. ʻʻSeetherʼʼ also relates to someone who seethes — simmering multiple orgasm often experienced by multi-orgasmin lesbians during cunnilingus. But according to Louise Post`s view, expressed to Las Vegas Sun: “One who seethes, one who’s angry. It’s just really simple to me”. So “seether” personifies suppressed female rage. But the dictionary offers no variation on the word “seethe” called “seether”.

The single was a success and Veruca Salt accompanied Hole on a tour, before releasing their first full-length album, American Thighs. After signing to Geffen Records, the band quickly gained in popularity as ʻʻSeetherʼʼ became an MTV hit.

Their second album, Eight Arms to Hold You, was produced by Bob Rock and released in 1997. Lead single ʻʻVolcano Girlsʼʼ and another single, ʻʻShutterbugʼʼ, gained huge success.

In 1997-1999, Gordon, Shapiro and Lack left the band and Post, as the only remaining band member Veruca Salt, has continued to perform with various artists during the next decade.

In 2008 the band went on a lengthy hiatus. On March 15, 2013, the band announced the reunion of its original line-up Nina Gordon, Louise Post and Jim Shapiro. In 2015 they even released a new album Ghost Notes, but nobody cares except the fans …

Lyrics

Ow!

Seether is neither loose nor tight
Seether is neither black nor white
I tried to keep her on a short leash
I tried to calm her down
I tried to ram her into the ground, yeah

Can’t fight the seether
Can’t fight the seether
Can’t fight the seether
I can’t see her till I’m foaming at the mouth

Seether is neither big nor small
Seether is the center of it all
I tried to rock her in my cradle
I tried to knock her out
I tried to cram her back in my mouth, yeah

Can’t fight the seether
Can’t fight the seether
Can’t fight the seether
I can’t see her till I’m foaming at the mouth

Keep her down, boiling water
Keep her down, what a lovely daughter
Oh, she is not born like other girls
But I know how to conceive her
Oh, she may not look like other girls
But she’s a snarl-toothed seether, seether!

Can’t fight the seether
Can’t fight the seether
Can’t fight the seether
I can’t see her till I’m foaming at the mouth
Seether
Can’t fight the seether
Can’t fight the seether
Can’t fight the seether
I can’t see her till I’m foaming at the mouth, yeah
